Cosmetic surgery for men
Cosmetic Surgery for Men is on the rise in the UK with a 21 per cent growth in demand for male plastic surgery since 2009.
The UK was ranked 18th in the world for the total number of cosmetic
surgery procedures carried out in 2009 – with 192,678 performed that
year. The majority of plastic surgery procedures are carried out on
women, but ten per cent of these were carried out on men.
Getting ahead in the job interview process – by coming across as
younger and more energetic – and improving career prospects seem to be
the motivation for many men getting cosmetic surgery. Meanwhile,
rhinoplasty, eye lid surgery, male breast reduction, otoplasty and
liposuction are the most popular procedures for males, the research
found.
In a recent report by newspaper the Lancashire Telegraph, men in the
north-west were found to be turning to cosmetic surgery in a bid to look
as young and fresh-faced as the current contestants on BBC show The
Apprentice. According to a plastic surgeon featured in the article, more
men are doing this in order to get a competitive edge in the employment
market during these times of economic austerity, where it can be
difficult to find a job.
A similar phenomenon also seems to be happening in the US. Last year,
1.1 million men went under the knife with the hope of achieving a more
youthful-looking appearance, according to research published by the
American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The study found that cosmetic
surgery procedures rose by two per cent in 2010, with the number of male
facelifts increasing by 14 per cent.
